Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®) is a groundbreaking approach to stress management and trauma recovery. Developed by Dr. David Berceli, TRE® focuses on activating the body's innate ability to release tension, stress, and trauma through a series of simple, guided exercises. This process helps to calm the nervous system and restore a sense of balance and well-being. But how exactly does TRE® work? Let’s explore the science behind this innovative technique.
The Science of Stress and Trauma
When we experience stress or trauma, our body activates a fight, flight, or freeze response. This is part of our autonomic nervous system—specifically the sympathetic branch—which prepares us to deal with threats. While this response is vital for survival, prolonged or repeated activation can result in chronic stress, tension, and physical discomfort.
The body stores this unresolved stress in muscles, particularly in areas like the psoas, which connects the spine to the lower body. Over time, these held tensions can disrupt the natural balance of the nervous system, leading to physical and emotional challenges.
What Is TRE®?
TRE® is a series of seven simple exercises designed to fatigue specific muscle groups gently. This fatigue helps to induce a natural reflex mechanism called neurogenic tremors. These tremors are an innate way the body releases deep muscular tension and resets the nervous system.
The process is accessible to most people and does not require any specialized equipment or prior fitness experience. TRE® can be practiced under the guidance of a certified practitioner or, after proper instruction, in a self-guided manner. Although it is to be noted that in order to release trauma, we need to be witnessed, so it is important to have a trusted friend or professional there to support you.
How TRE® Works
Targeting Tension-Holding Muscles: TRE® exercises focus on engaging and gently fatiguing the psoas and other core muscles. These areas are often the primary storage sites for stress and trauma.
Inducing Neurogenic Tremors: As the exercises progress, the body begins to tremor or shake involuntarily. This is a natural mechanism that animals in the wild often use to discharge stress after a life-threatening event. Humans have this same capacity, but we often suppress these tremors due to social conditioning.
Releasing Stored Stress: The tremors travel through the body, releasing stored tension in the muscles and calming the nervous system. This process can lead to a profound sense of relaxation and emotional release.
Resetting the Nervous System: As the body releases tension, the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system (often referred to as the “rest and digest” system) is activated. This helps to counteract the effects of chronic stress and promotes healing.
Benefits of TRE®
Physical Relaxation: TRE® helps to alleviate chronic muscle tension and pain.
Emotional Balance: It provides a safe outlet for releasing emotional stress and trauma.
Improved Sleep: Many people report better sleep quality after practicing TRE®.
Enhanced Resilience: By resetting the nervous system, TRE® builds a greater capacity to handle future stress.
Is TRE® Right for You?
TRE® is generally safe for most individuals, but it is especially beneficial for those experiencing stress, anxiety, trauma, or chronic physical tension. It’s important to start slowly, so join a private or group session with a certified TRE® provider today.
